Classroom settings are very important
but that’s what they get all the time and so to have voices that
are diverse and different, that bring the kind of experience that is
outside of formal academia, I think it’s very very useful and can in
some ways become a catalyst for thinking newly about things that they have
learned in class. I think human beings respond to theories and facts
and figures but they’re moved by stories and it’s what moves us that makes us
act. I’m hoping that if there were young people who were in the audience today
that they start to realize that questioning is not a bad thing and that
nobody’s perfect because I wanted to make sure that they knew that being this
feminist icon doesn’t mean that I have all the answers and I hope it makes them
feel comfortable in their own process of learning.
